A section for occasional gear articles and personal ponderings …..

My 'weblog' articles cover specific subject matters or topics relating to my Nikon equipment, or anything else that takes my fancy that's connected with wildlife photography. Some articles will have evolved from comments made under the ‘other events and news’ section of one of my ‘quarterly diary’ come blog entries. Most of those comments will have been about cameras or lenses, whereas I want the 'weblog' to cover much more than that. I’m effectively treating it as a new section as it is has now been revamped to include some of the articles from my short-lived ‘D850 Blog’, which became somewhat limiting in its original form.

Delkin to provide an XQD card option
Sunday, 19th August 2018

Delkin XQD cards
I’ve previously written about the problems with XQD card supply and the fact that, over the past year or so, Lexar have effectively been out of the market and, as such, Sony has been the one and only choice as they are currently the only memory card manufacturer producing XQD format cards. Well the good news is that that situation is just about to change as Delkin have acquired a licence and will shortly be offering a Premium XQD card of their own to compete with Sony’s top of the range G series model.

My current gear list

My gear list
My previous articles have made me conscious that the ‘my gear’ section of the website needs updating now that my D810’s have been replaced by a D850 and D500. I've also traded in my 300mm f/2.8 lens shown in the small thumbnail to the left, part-exchanged the 70-200mm f/2.8G for the latest f/2.8E model, and have added a couple of new lenses. I will get round to tidying up the section, but in the meantime here’s a current camera and lens equipment list in the same format as the existing one.

D500 - backward step, or sensible decision?

D500
Continuing my previous article about the D850 and my requirements for an alternative or supplemental body, this equally long post runs through my thought process and why I opted for the D500 despite certain reservations.

D850 - 'The Diva'

D850 - 'The Diva'
I’ve been using the D850 for a few months now and am slowly getting to understand some of her idiosyncrasies and, as a result, thought I’d make a few observations about my initial experiences and why I’ve started calling it ‘The Diva’.

Lexar XQD memory cards
Monday, 19th March 2018

Lexar XQD cards
You would have thought that if you’d just purchased a new high-end Nikon camera such as the D850, or indeed the D5 or D500, that supports the XQD card format that you would have no problem in obtaining suitable memory cards. Furthermore, if you’d taken notice of the accompanying manual, you would have been under the impression that there would be a number of options regarding both speed and capacity, albeit from just two manufacturers - Sony and Lexar. Sadly, that isn’t the case, and nor has it been since the D850 was launched. Even if you were one of the fortunate few that managed to get hold of the camera after it was first available for pre-order you would have found that some of the listed XQD cards had been discontinued. The situation then deteriorated as a result of the closure and subsequent sale of Lexar and, subject to when you were actually trying to purchase your XQD card(s), dried up completely for a while as there simply wasn’t any stock available from either manufacturer. I gave a lot of thought to this matter, so much so that it prompted me to write the article listed below entitled ‘D850 memory cards and related issues’. That was five months ago, since which time there have been further developments.

Finally together and getting acquainted

D850 Getting acquainted
I’ve had my new D850 for four weeks now, but surprisingly we still haven’t been out together. You’d think that upgrading from the D810 would be simple, however the D850 incorporates a number of new features and a couple of different options for setting the various function buttons and dials. I like to spend time getting acquainted with a new camera and, even if I do have to tweak something later on, getting it functioning the way I want before I take into the field. As technology advances it’s inevitable that there is more to think about, to get right, but also to get wrong or simply to make too complicated. In this post I talk through the way I’ve set my camera up, particularly in respect of the ‘custom control assignment’ options. Much of what I’ve done will be reasonably obvious, but I’d like to think that the article will contain some snippets of information that will be useful to anyone with a new D850, or even a similarly featured Nikon camera such as the D500.

D850 memory cards and related issues

D850 Memory Cards
Immediately after placing my D850 on pre-order I started thinking about memory cards, because I knew that I was going to be faced with a pretty hefty additional expense. Although I had a good idea where the exercise would take me, I had to consider a number of factors before making any final decisions - questions regarding the format, capacity/size, brand/speed, quantity required and, not to be forgotten, the need for a new card reader. You may be surprised by the number of issues these questions raised.

D850 v D810 comparative specifications and a few personal observations

D850 Specs
Better and certainly more comprehensively detailed elsewhere on the web, but here’s my take on the key performance features of the D850 (excluding its video capabilities) that I’ve noted when specifically comparing its specs with the D810.

D850 rumours, announcements and the first reviews

D850 Coming Soon
Whilst the initial rumours about a pending D810 upgrade can be traced back to February 2017 and probably further, they didn’t really start gathering pace until the end of May, which was ….. This proved correct, because Nikon did indeed make an announcement on 25th July 2017, but it wasn’t quite what the press and rumour mongers were expecting ….. The official company announcement followed a month later …..

Website going live
Thursday, 22nd June 2017

This was my very first 'weblog' entry, posted on the day that I made www.tickspics.com an operationally ‘live’ website. However, it was also the only entry to the 'weblog', which is why I decided to revamp the section and reassign some of my ‘D850 diary’ blogs. A website has to be current and, consequently, has to evolve, so I have no problem in recognising that my intention of running two different blogs as well as a 'quarterly diary' was ambitious to say the least! Hopefully this new format will work.
